Hi Nels,

Thanks for the input. I think there is a time and a place for both wide and narrow scope discussion of topics. In this case, I think that the prohibition of drugs is almost always dealt with in a wider scope because I have very rarely seen the issue of privacy discussed when it comes to the effect drug policy has on privacy.

I also think it is helpful when dealing with a complex issue, as this is for many people, to parse it out in order to understand each part before you can accurately consider the effect of all of the parts combined. No doubt that some things will be missed with such a narrow focus, but other points are missed when the focus is broad. Since it is far more common to miss the points raised in a narrow focus, I think it is more helpful to elucidate them here.

Finally, different people are persuaded with different methods. Some people prefer a passionate and zealous advocate. Others prefer a dispassionate analytical approach. There are infinite other approaches to take. The approach I have taken is rare so it will hopefully reach those who have not been reached with other methods.

Thanks for your comment.

I appreciate your scope-specific topical coverage of material possession bans. I agree with your finding. I wonder if the gold prohibition in the US shared some of these infringements of privacy. Though I understand the occasional one-issue coverage for emotionally charged topics, I have not adopted such a method. It seems that one-issue coverage may omit pertinent information. Understanding the world, frequently requires wide-scope coverage. I will note that I mostly work to educate people who have not already formed prejudices (I teach children).
